## Definition

A subject line identifies the topic, event, or value of a message in limited inbox space. It works alongside the sender name and preview text: the sender answers who, the subject answers what, and the preview can add useful context.

Good subjects are specific enough to set an honest expectation and short enough to preserve their important words in compact views. Length alone is not a quality metric.

## Why it matters

The subject affects recognition and initial attention, but its promise also shapes clicks, conversion, complaints, and trust after the open. A curiosity gap that attracts the wrong open can reduce total performance.

## How it works

1. The sender sets one Subject header for the message.
2. The mailbox decodes and renders it according to available space.
3. The recipient interprets it with the sender identity, preview, and relationship history.
4. Replies and forwards may add conventional prefixes as a real conversation develops.

## Example: Specific beats generic

```text
Weak:   Important account update
Better: Your Northstar invoice is ready
Weak:   You won't believe this
Better: Three changes to your weekly report
```

## Common mistakes

- Using Re: or Fwd: when the message is not a reply or forward.
- Hiding the important information behind vague curiosity.
- Repeating the sender name or preview text without adding context.
- Judging a test only by opens.

## Key takeaways

- State the message’s real topic or value.
- Front-load words that distinguish this email.
- Measure downstream behavior and negative signals.
